Glossary: Antioxidant Defenses

Antioxidant defenses are compounds that inhibit oxidation—oxidation that can trigger the production of free radicals. Free radical activity can cause irreparable damage to the cells of organisms.

Antioxidants are intimately involved in the prevention of cellular damage — the common pathway for cancer, aging, and a variety of diseases like lupus.
